Symptom

La Cornue oven will not light

A vaulted gas oven that will not light gives you nothing to work with — no display, no code, no window — because La Cornue's Château guide contains no error codes at all. That is normal for this make. The diagnosis is igniter, safety valve, thermocouple and supply, measured in that order.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Confirm which oven

Gas or electric side. This is the commonest confusion on a dual-fuel range.

  2. 02

    Watch for a glow

In a dim kitchen, with the door open a crack if you safely can. Glow, no glow, or weak glow.

  3. 03

    Check the cooktop burners

If they are fine, the gas supply is fine and the problem is in the oven.

  4. 04

    Stop after two tries

A sealed vaulted cavity with unburnt gas in it is the one thing to avoid while waiting.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “No code is not a symptom — this oven has nothing to print one with”
  • “A glowing igniter with no flame is the classic failure”
  • “Two attempts, then stop and shut the range off at its valve”
A wide writing desk set against a tall window in bright daylight: a stack of thick unmarked paper booklets, a closed laptop, a pair of reading glasses and a mug, with a green garden out of focus beyond the glass.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

On a range, the data plate is behind the kick panel or on the frame under the oven door. On a wall oven, the data plate is on the side of the opening behind the door. All models

About La Cornue oven will not light

Which door, and what happens when you try

First, which oven — on a dual-fuel Château one side is gas and the other is electric, and they are two different appliances sharing a cabinet. Then watch what happens: does the igniter glow at all, and how brightly? A dead oven with no glow points at the igniter circuit or the supply. A confident glow with no flame is the classic failure of this make, and it is a part we carry. If it lights and dies, that is the will-not-stay-lit page.

What it usually means, by the kind of La Cornue appliance

La Cornue sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • Château vaulted gas oven — One or two of them depending on the size, and on a dual-fuel range only one side is gas. Which door matters.
  • Château vaulted electric oven — No ignition at all — if this side is dead, read the not-reaching-temperature page instead.
  • CornuFé 90 and 110 dual fuel — The ovens on these are electric convection; a CornuFé has no gas oven to light.
  • Château Tourelle — Fully electric. Nothing on this page applies to it.

Why we treat this as a same-day call

A surface burner that will not light puts its gas into an open room where you can see whether it is burning. A vaulted gas oven has no window, a heavy insulated door and a sealed cavity, and it holds what it is given. The failure mode we most want to avoid is somebody trying four or five times over half an hour and then trying once more. So the advice on this page is deliberately blunt: two attempts, then turn the range off at its shut-off valve and call. We prioritize these.

What the measurement adds

Igniters on gas ovens are current-operated: the safety valve opens when the igniter draws enough amps, not when it looks bright. An igniter can glow convincingly and still be well below the threshold, which is why an oven can look as though it is trying perfectly hard and never light. That single measurement — a clamp meter on the igniter circuit — separates the two commonest causes on this appliance in about a minute, and it is the reason we do not simply fit an igniter and hope.

Questions about La Cornue oven will not light

It lit yesterday and not today. Nothing has changed.

That is the normal way this problem arrives, and it is not mysterious: an igniter degrades gradually and crosses the threshold on one particular day. It is also why an oven that has been getting slower to light for a few weeks — a minute, then two, then not at all — was telling you this was coming. If you noticed that, mention it; it is confirmation rather than a complaint, and it makes the diagnosis quick.

Can I light the oven with a match in the meantime?

No, and this is the one place we are firm about it. On a surface burner, lighting with a long match is a reasonable stopgap because you can see the flame and the gas is going into an open room. A vaulted oven is a sealed cavity with the burner out of sight behind a heavy door, and the safety valve exists precisely to stop gas flowing when there is no established flame. Reaching into that is how people are hurt. Use the cooktop and wait for the visit.
