Symptom
La Cornue hood noisy or vibrating
A hood that has started to rumble, drone or vibrate is a hood that will eventually stop, usually on a day when the kitchen is full. It is also the symptom people put up with longest, because it still extracts — and it is the one where acting early genuinely saves the expensive part.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
A failing blower bearing
The rumble that gets worse. It ends in a seized motor and a tripped overload.
Hood blower and capacitor repair from $285 -
Grease imbalance on the wheel
An uneven deposit on one side of the blower wheel. Vibration, and entirely recoverable.
Hood filter and duct service from $175 -
A blade or housing making contact
The regular tick. Usually a housing that has shifted on its mounts.
Hood blower and capacitor repair from $285 -
A loose baffle, latch or panel
The rattle you can stop with a hand. Cheap and immediate.
Hood filter and duct service from $175 -
Duct resonance
A noise that appeared after ductwork was changed, and that lives in the run rather than in the hood.

About La Cornue hood noisy or vibrating
Tell the three noises apart
A low rumble or drone that rises with speed is a bearing. A regular tick or scrape at any speed is something touching — a bent blade, a shifted housing, a loose baffle. A rattle that you can stop by pressing a panel with your hand is a fixing or a latch, and it is a minute's work. Grease imbalance sits between them: a wheel with an uneven deposit vibrates rather than rumbles, and cleaning it cures it completely.
What it usually means, by the kind of La Cornue appliance
La Cornue sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.
- Château motorized hoods — A four-speed motor in a large enamelled canopy that resonates. Small imbalances become audible.
- Two-motor canopies — A noise that changes with speed on one side only, and extraction that has quietly halved.
- Château hood inserts — Enclosed in cabinetry, so noise reaches you as vibration through the carcass rather than as sound.
- CornuFé hood collection — Lighter canopies, and a loose baffle or latch rattles more audibly than a bearing does.
Why waiting costs more here
A blower that is rumbling is a blower whose bearing is already worn, and the failure sequence is predictable: more noise, more current, thermal overload trips, then a seized motor. Along the way the extraction drops, so the grease the hood is not catching goes onto the cabinets and into the cabinet below where the range's own electronics live. Replacing a bearing-noisy blower on a planned visit is a straightforward job on a hood that is open once; replacing a seized one after it has failed usually means the same job at short notice, with a kitchen that has been unusable for a week.
The recoverable causes are the common ones
It is worth saying, because a change in noise makes people assume the worst: at least half of these calls end in cleaning rather than parts. Grease builds unevenly on a blower wheel and a few ounces on one side of a wheel spinning at speed is a genuine imbalance you can feel through the canopy. A baffle that no longer latches rattles at exactly one speed. A housing that has crept on its mounts ticks once per revolution. All three are cheap, and all three are found by having the hood open.

Questions about La Cornue hood noisy or vibrating
It only makes the noise on speeds three and four.
That fits an imbalance or a resonance rather than a bearing at the end of its life, which is relatively good news. At higher speed a small mass imbalance on the wheel generates enough force to be heard and felt, while at low speed it is inaudible; a resonance in the canopy or duct behaves the same way, appearing at one particular speed and disappearing above it. Both are worth having looked at while they are still cleaning and adjustment. Mention which speeds when you book.
Is it worth just replacing the whole hood?
Almost never, and we would talk you out of it. The canopy is the expensive part — enamelled and trimmed to match your range, priced from $17,400 — and it is not what fails. What fails is a blower, a capacitor, a bearing, a control or a lamp, all of which are serviceable inside a canopy that will outlast the kitchen. Replacing a hood because its motor is noisy is replacing a matched piece of the range to solve a part costing a fraction of it.
