Symptom

La Cornue hood blower will not start

A hood with working lights and a dead fan has narrowed the problem down for you: the supply and part of the control are alive. What remains is the speed control, the motor and — on the cheapest and commonest failure — the capacitor that gets it turning.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Try both control paths

In-hood buttons and the remote. Which one works is the diagnosis.

  2. 02

    Change the remote battery

Free, thirty seconds, and it is the answer more often than anybody admits.

  3. 03

    Listen for a hum

Hum without rotation is a capacitor. Silence is a control.

  4. 04

    Check the lights

Lights working means the supply and half the control are fine, which rules out a lot.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Lights working means the supply is fine”
  • “The capacitor is cheap, common and tested before the motor is condemned”
  • “A hum with no rotation is the classic capacitor signature”
A canvas tool roll opened flat on a timber bench in daylight, spanners and screwdrivers in their loops, one nut driver lying beside it.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

In more detail

About La Cornue hood blower will not start

Listen at the moment you press it

A hum or a click with no rotation is the classic starting-capacitor failure — the motor is energised and cannot get moving. Complete silence points at the switch, the speed control or the receiver instead. And try both control paths before you decide anything: a hood that answers its own buttons but ignores the remote is a receiver or a battery, and a hood that ignores both while its lights work is the control or the motor.

What it usually means, by the kind of La Cornue appliance

La Cornue sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • Château motorized hoods — Four-speed variable motor with in-hood and remote control. Which of the two responds narrows the problem immediately.
  • Two-motor canopies — Both blowers are tested. One dead motor with the other running is easy to miss and halves the extraction.
  • Château hood inserts — 600 CFM internal blower with a remote. Same failure list in a smaller housing.
  • CornuFé hood collection — Cascade, Euclid, Loge, Marquee and the 90 and 110 hoods — different canopies, same electrical architecture.

Why we test the capacitor first

Because it is a few dollars, it fails far more often than motors do, and its failure looks exactly like a dead motor to anybody standing in the kitchen. A hood condemned as needing a blower when it needed a capacitor is an expensive and entirely avoidable mistake, and on a canopy priced between $17,400 and $25,000 the difference is worth the ten minutes. If the capacitor is good and the motor is genuinely dead, we say so with the measurement, and we tell you whether the motor is available as a part or only as an assembly.

Getting the blower out without damaging the hood

The canopy is enamelled and trimmed to match the range beneath it, which changes how this job is done rather than what is done. The hood is supported before any mount is undone, surfaces are covered, and the load is taken off rather than balanced on a shoulder. On a two-motor canopy both blowers come under scrutiny while it is open, because opening a hood twice in a year is twice the risk to a finish that cannot be touched up on site.

Before you book

Questions about La Cornue hood blower will not start

It ran for a second and then stopped, and now it does nothing.

That sequence is worth reporting exactly as you have described it, because it points at thermal protection rather than at a dead component. Motors have an overload cut-out; a blower dragging against grease, or one with a failing bearing, draws too much current, heats up and trips. It then refuses to restart until it cools, which is why it seems to be dead and then briefly alive. The underlying problem is mechanical — the wheel or the bearing — and running it until it stops permanently is the expensive way to find that out.

Only the highest speed works.

That is the speed control rather than the motor almost every time, and it is a distinct part from the blower. A four-speed variable control that has lost its lower taps leaves you with all-or-nothing extraction, which is usable and loud. Worth fixing rather than living with: the low speeds are what a hood is meant to run at while something simmers, and a hood nobody switches on because it is deafening is a hood that is not protecting the kitchen.
