Vitreous enamel is glass fused to steel and about fifty colors of it were available at order time. A chip is not cosmetic in this climate — the steel under it rusts outwards — and a tarnished brass handrail attacked with the wrong product loses its lacquer along with the tarnish.

Why a chip is not cosmetic here
Under the enamel is steel, and this is a kitchen within a few miles of salt water. A chip on a drip tray or beside a burner is exposed steel in the wettest, hottest, most acidic place on the appliance, and it will rust outward from the day it happens. Stabilising it early is inexpensive; replacing a panel later is a made-to-order part ordered against a color reference from the original invoice. Stabilized, yes; invisible, rarely, and we would rather say so. Vitreous enamel is glass fused to steel and a filled chip is a filled chip — it stops the rust, which is the point, and in a low-heat area away from eye level it disappears into the range. On a visible face, next to a burner, the honest answer is a replacement part in the original color.
My brass has gone dull. Is that a repair?
