# La Cornue gas smell in the kitchen

### What to do, in order

Shut the gas off at the appliance valve if you can reach it safely. Open windows and doors. Do not switch anything on or off, including the hood and the lights, and do not use a phone in the room — call from outside. If the smell is strong or you feel unwell, leave and call 911 or the utility from outside. A persistent smell with nothing lit is an emergency and is not a repair booking.

### What it usually means, by the kind of La Cornue appliance

La Cornue sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **Every gas model** — Château and CornuFé alike, this is a supply-and-valve matter and it is handled the same way regardless of size or configuration.
- **All-induction and Tourelle** — No gas connection at all. A smell in a kitchen with only electric La Cornue appliances is not coming from them.

### Why we say this rather than diagnose

Every other page on this site is written to help you understand your range. This one is written to get you out of the room. Natural gas and propane are odorised precisely so that a leak is noticed by smell, and the correct response to noticing one has never been to investigate it yourself. We would rather be called second, after the utility, than be the reason somebody stayed in a kitchen to describe a smell over the phone.

### What happens when we do come

The whole gas train is leak-tested with instruments and a test solution — every joint from the shut-off to each burner, the manifold, the oven feeds and the plaque and grill burners. Where the leak is at a connection it is remade to specification and re-tested. Where a valve is passing with its knob off, that valve is replaced rather than adjusted. Nothing is signed off on the basis that the smell has gone; it is signed off on a test.

A leaking joint or connector

Often at a connection made or disturbed during work on the kitchen. Found with instruments, never with a flame.

A valve passing with the knob off

The one internal problem that produces a persistent smell. The valve comes out.

Unlit gas from repeated ignition attempts

Not a leak, but the same smell. This is why the other pages say two attempts and stop.

A pilot or oven burner that has gone out

On an oven with no window, an extinguished burner announces itself by smell.

A conversion or installation problem

A connector kinked behind the range, a fitting left hand-tight. It dates from a specific day's work.

Shut it off first

The appliance valve, if it is safe to reach. Everything else waits.

Do not switch anything

Hood, lights, extractor fan or phone. Ventilate and leave.

Notice when you smell it

Only while lighting, or all the time. Persistent is an emergency; momentary is a problem to book.

Call the utility or 911

Before us. We will come and find it, but not before the room is safe.

Stop and read this first

What it usually means

Utility or 911 first, appliance repair second

Do not operate switches, the hood or a phone in the room

A faint smell only while lighting is a different matter from a persistent one

### I only smell it for a second when I light a burner. Is that normal?

It is common and it is not something to ignore either. A brief smell as gas reaches a burner before it lights is ordinary — that is unlit gas doing what unlit gas does for a second. What is not ordinary is smelling it for several seconds, smelling it after the flame is established, or smelling it near a burner nobody has touched. The first is a slow-lighting burner worth booking; the last two are a leak.

### The gas company came and said it is the appliance. What now?

Then we take it from there, and the report they leave you is genuinely useful — bring it to the visit. A utility technician will isolate the appliance and confirm the leak is downstream of their meter, which tells us it is in the connector, the manifold or a valve. That is our work, it is a same-day priority for us, and the range stays off at its valve until it is done.
