# La Cornue cracked induction glass

### What to do before anyone arrives

Turn the cooktop off and isolate it at the supply — the breaker if the appliance has no accessible switch. Do not put a pan on it, do not clean it with anything wet, and do not try the zones to see which ones still work. A crack in a ceramic hob is a path for liquid into live electronics, and the fact that it still cooks is not evidence that it is safe. Photograph it once, cold and dry, and send us that.

### What it usually means, by the kind of La Cornue appliance

La Cornue sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **All-induction Château** — A full-width panel over four or five zones. Replaced as a panel, matched to the configuration.
- **CornuFé 90 and 110 induction** — Factory panel, more standardised, usually shorter lead time.
- **Ceramic induction module in a gas Château** — A two-zone glass insert in a gas top. The rest of the range stays usable while it is on order, which is worth knowing.

### Why this page is shorter on diagnosis than the others

Because there is nothing to diagnose. Ceramic glass is either intact or it is not, and once it is not, the appliance is out of service until the panel is replaced. What the visit is actually for is the part that cannot be seen: whether anything has already reached the coils and the electronics through the crack, whether the frame and seal are sound, and what the panel needs to be ordered against. A hob that cracked last week and has been cleaned twice since is a different job from one that cracked this morning.

### Ordering the panel

The glass belongs to the top’s own layout — the number of zones and where they sit — rather than to a size, because the printed zone markings have to line up with the coils beneath them. On a made-to-order cooktop that means the order goes against the range’s configuration code. We quote it with its lead time before ordering. On a gas Château with a two-zone induction insert the rest of the top stays fully usable in the meantime; on an all-induction range it does not, and we will say so plainly when we quote.

A dropped pan or a heavy lid. The overwhelming majority of cracked hobs, and it is nobody's problem beyond an ordinary kitchen accident.

Thermal shock

A cold wet cloth or a spill of cold liquid onto a hot zone.

A boil-dry followed by cooling

Related to the E2 problem: a dry pan takes the glass far past its normal working temperature.

A stress point at the frame

Rare, and usually installation-related — a panel bedded or clamped unevenly.

Liquid already through the crack

Not a cause but the reason for urgency. Coils and electronics are inspected as part of the job.

At the breaker if necessary. This is the first action, before assessment.

Do not test the zones

Curiosity here has a genuine electrical risk behind it.

No wet cloths, no cleaning products, nothing that can run into the crack.

Photograph it cold

One clear picture tells us the extent and whether it is a panel or an insert.

Stop using it now

What it usually means

Disconnect it at the supply — the maker says so, not us

Do not cook on it, even on the zones that still work

The replacement panel is ordered to that top's own zone layout

### It only looks like a chip at the edge, not a crack. Same rules?

Not quite, and it is worth having it looked at rather than guessed at. A chip at the very edge of the panel, outside the sealed area and away from any zone, can sometimes be monitored — but the assessment is whether the glass is still continuous and whether the seal is intact, and that is not something to judge from above. A chip inside a zone marking or anywhere liquid can sit is treated as a crack. Photograph it and we will tell you which you have before booking anything.

### Is it covered by anything?

Impact damage to a glass hob is normally excluded from a manufacturer's warranty, so in most cases the honest answer is no — but it is often covered by household contents insurance as accidental damage, and on a panel for this equipment that is a claim worth making. What helps is a written diagnostic with the cause, the part reference and the quote, which is what our report gives you. Ask for it in that form and we will write it that way.
