# La Cornue oven door seal and hinge service

### About the door on a vaulted oven

The door is part of the cooking mass, so a seal that no longer meets its frame is a cooking complaint long before it is a visible leak: long preheats, a cool front shelf, browning on one side, an oven described as losing its power. The seal, the catch and the hinges are one system and adjusting one without the others is how this comes back — a new seal on a tired hinge compresses unevenly and hardens early. Everything is measured hot, because these doors fit differently at temperature than they do cold.

What this involves

Seal, catch and hinge adjusted as one system

Door pull measured, not judged by how it sounds

Heat loss confirmed before and after

Check the catch and the pull

The manual's own answer to uneven cooking begins with whether the door is being held firmly against the seal.

Measure the heat loss

Around the whole perimeter with the oven hot, so the fix is aimed rather than guessed.

Seal condition and seating

Hardened, flattened or shrunk. A seal that looks intact can be doing nothing.

Hinges and springs

A heavy door on tired hinges no longer lands where the catch expects it.

Re-check hot, not cold

Everything on a vaulted oven fits differently at temperature, which is where the complaint lives.

### How do I test it myself?

Close a strip of paper in the door and pull it out at eight or ten points round the whole perimeter — top corners, middle of each side, bottom. Everywhere it grips, the seal works; everywhere it slides free, it does not. The pattern is diagnostic: loose along the top is usually hinge or catch, loose in one corner is usually the seal.

### The door is stiff to open. Related?

Often the same adjustment from the other side. A catch pulling too hard onto a hardened seal gives a stiff door that still leaks at the corners, because the door pivots on the middle of the seal instead of landing flat. Stiff and leaky are not contradictory.
