# La Cornue enamel panel and trim service cost

### Why a chip is not cosmetic here

Under the enamel is steel, and this is a kitchen within a few miles of salt water. A chip on a drip tray or beside a burner is exposed steel in the wettest, hottest, most acidic place on the appliance, and it will rust outward from the day it happens. Stabilising it early is inexpensive; replacing a panel later is a made-to-order part ordered against a color reference from the original invoice. Which is the other reason to have the finish identified while nothing is urgent.

What moves this figure

from $265 for assessment and treatment

A panel in the range's own color is a made-to-order part

Clear-coated trim is identified before anything is polished

Where the chip is

Low-heat and away from a burner is stabilisable. On a drip tray or under a burner it is a part.

Which trim metal

Polished and brushed brass, copper, nickel, chrome, matte black and bronze all behave differently.

Whether it is clear-coated

Available on brushed and polished brass and copper. Polishing a lacquered surface removes the lacquer.

Whether the color is a catalog one

About fifty enamels are catalog colors. A one-of-a-kind color was $3,400 at order time and is quoted individually.

How long the steel has been exposed

Rust spreading from a chip is what turns an assessment into a part.

### Can a chip be touched up so it does not show?

Stabilized, yes; invisible, rarely, and we would rather say so. Vitreous enamel is glass fused to steel and a filled chip is a filled chip — it stops the rust, which is the point, and in a low-heat area away from eye level it disappears into the range. On a visible face, next to a burner, the honest answer is a replacement part in the original color.

### My brass has gone dull. Is that a repair?

That is maintenance, and often a conversation rather than a visit. Polished brass on these ranges is frequently natural, non-coated metal that is meant to patina — La Cornue says so in its own literature — and a coastal kitchen accelerates it. What matters is knowing whether yours is coated before you take anything abrasive to it, because that is the mistake that cannot be undone.
