# La Cornue induction hob: the pan-missing symbol means the zone cannot see a suitable pan, and it is usually the pan

### What the appliance is actually doing

Every induction zone on these cooktops has a pan detector, and when a zone is switched on with no pan on it — or with a pan too small for that zone — no heat is generated and the pan-missing symbol appears. The size part is the one that catches people out, because the pan looks perfectly reasonable: the published minimum base diameters are 4¾ inches at the front left zone, 5½ inches at the rear zones and 8¼ inches at the center. A smaller pan is not a malfunction, it is a pan the zone cannot couple to.

### Quoted rather than interpreted

>
If a cooking area is switched on and there is no pan in place or if the pan is too small for the cooking area, then no heat will be generated.

From the CornuFé 110 induction installation and user guide (U111136-03, January 2023), in a User Guide & Service Manual downloaded from La Cornue’s own site. Nothing on this page is decoded beyond what that sentence says.

### Which machines this one applies to

La Cornue induction cooktops and rangetops, and the electric and multifunction ovens. La Cornue publishes three codes in the whole of its US documentation and its Château guide carries no troubleshooting section, so a behavior missing from this archive is not proof that your appliance cannot do it — the maker simply never wrote a table for it. What its guides do document, they document in sentences, and those are on this site under the maker’s own wording. The model number, and which top the range was ordered with, settle what any of it means.

### What to do about it

- Try a different pan — heavy, flat, and magnetic enough that a fridge magnet grips its base firmly.
- Measure the base against the minimum for that zone: 4¾ inches front left, 5½ at the rear, 8¼ in the center.
- Check the pan is centered on the zone rather than overlapping two.
- If a known good pan on the right zone still shows the symbol while other zones work, that is a coil or a detection problem and it is worth a visit.
- Do not rely on the pan detector to switch a zone off after cooking — the maker says explicitly to switch the element off by its own control.

### Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is [diagnostic visit](/services/diagnostic-visit/), and every one of those pages carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call [(305) 614-3699](tel:+13056143699) and describe what the display is doing before booking anything.
