# La Cornue cooktop: the burner lights and dies when you let go, which is the safety device doing its job

### What the appliance is actually doing

Each cooktop burner has a safety device that stops the flow of gas if the flame goes out, and lighting a burner means overriding it by holding the control knob in long enough for the flame sensor to heat up and take over. So a burner that dies the moment you release the knob is not necessarily broken — the maker’s own first suggestion is to turn the control off, wait a minute, and try again holding the knob in slightly longer. What is not normal is a burner that will not hold however long you hold it, and that is a sensor or a valve.

### Quoted rather than interpreted

>
If, when you let go of the control knob, the burner goes out, the safety device has not held in. Turn the control to the off position and wait one minute, then try again this time holding in the control knob for slightly longer.

From the CornuFé 110 dual fuel installation and user guide (U107101-21e), in a User Guide & Service Manual downloaded from La Cornue’s own site. Nothing on this page is decoded beyond what that sentence says.

### Which machines this one applies to

La Cornue gas and dual fuel ranges. La Cornue publishes three codes in the whole of its US documentation and its Château guide carries no troubleshooting section, so a behavior missing from this archive is not proof that your appliance cannot do it — the maker simply never wrote a table for it. What its guides do document, they document in sentences, and those are on this site under the maker’s own wording. The model number, and which top the range was ordered with, settle what any of it means.

### What to do about it

- Turn the control fully off and wait a minute. This is the maker’s own instruction and it is there for a reason.
- Try again, holding the knob in for a few seconds longer than usual.
- Time how long it holds after release. Instantly, or five to ten seconds, points at different parts.
- Try another burner. If every burner behaves this way the supply or the manifold is involved.
- Stop after two or three attempts. Every unsuccessful try is unlit gas in the room.

### Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is [gas valve and thermocouple repair](/services/gas-valve-and-thermocouple-repair/), and every one of those pages carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call [(305) 614-3699](tel:+13056143699) and describe what the display is doing before booking anything.
